SANDINGMASTER SMOOTHS PATH TO SUCCESS FOR ISIS

A huge boost in quality and efficiency has resulted from the introduction of a Timesavers-Sandingmaster wide belt sander at newly-formed ISIS omg Ltd.

The small business, of Harlescott, Shrewsbury employs six bench joiners and cabinet makers. It was set up last year by Oliver Davies and Greg Shaw, who previously worked for a large shopfitting company.

ISIS specialises in designing and making upmarket residential furniture as well as commercial interiors for the retail, office and leisure sectors, using a range of traditional machines. For the first few months it relied on traditional hand sanding but found it too time-consuming.

Visiting Woodmex to check out sanders, the partners chose the Timesavers- Sandingmaster 2300 twin-head machine being exhibited by T.M. Machinery Sales, sole U.K. agent for the Dutch-built machines, although it cost more than they had budgeted.

"We saw several sanders at half the price but just didn't think they would be up to the job," said Oliver Davies. "The Sandingmaster is sturdily constructed, is a tried and tested model and comes from an established manufacturer that only makes sanders, so spare parts will not be a problem." What also attracted them was the sander's ease of operation and the high level of after-sales services guaranteed by Leicester-based T.M. Machinery.

ISIS use it to sand hardwood and veneered board components prior to assembly, saving on average three quarters of the time it previously took by hand, and ending up with a perfectly smooth finish every time.

For example, they recently put 20 cabinet doors through the sander which took half an hour, with one pass per door. This would have taken two to three days if done by hand.

With a reputation for solid construction, reliability and superb performance, the Timesavers-Sandingmaster range is available from £6,000. All models can be supplied with unique membrane-controlled segmented pads while most manufacturers use cylinders, which are less accurate.

The compact Series 2300 model chosen by ISIS was developed for small and medium sized woodworking businesses and gives precision sanding from coarse calibrating to fine finishing. It has a frequency controlled feed speed of 5-22 m/min, a re- programmable thickness setting with a digital readout and a fine adjustment on the aggregate. The machine has a working width of 1100 mm and a belt size of 1130 x 1900 mm. There is a large adjustable 80 shore contact roller and a combination head with a softer roller and a 75 mm wide adjustable felt sanding pad.

"We are not a continuous production company and need the sander to perform when it's wanted, which is exactly what it does," said Greg Shaw. "The quality of the sanding is so much better than we could achieve by hand, and with its speed it frees men up to get on with more skilled jobs in the workshop." .
